Master Planning, Zoning Approval Application and Presentations
Fauquier County Architectural Review Board
Davis Buckley Architects and Planners was responsible for the design of the campus master plan, presentations for rezoning approvals and the design of a new 35,000 square foot Phase I buildings which feature 25 classrooms, science and computer labs, an art room, a library, a multi-purpose gymnasium and administrative offices. Its mass was visually diminshed by creating two wings and tucking them into the hillside. Fieldstone, cast stone sills, copings and arches reflect the forms of the original house and the nearby village. A stucco finish and aluminum clad wood windows deliver durability, energy efficiency and low maintenance
Future buildings will include a separate upper school, a library, an auditorium, a gymnasium/field house, and pre-school learning center. The adaptive reuse of the existing manor house and outbuildings, determines the site plan for the new buildings with respect to those already present, and establishes the material palette and architectural vocabulary for all future construction.
Preservation links the present to the past and was of unquestionable importance on this historically significant site, where Confederate and Union soldiers shed their blood in combat. A farm smoke house and an ice house, framing the entry walkway, now serve as waiting shelters for students. The farm’s manor house was restored and adapted for administrative offices. Davis Buckley Architects brought a wealth of insight to the Wakefield School project because of a sensitivity to the historical context and a commitment to adaptive reuse and historic preservation.
