WWII MEMORIAL COMPETITION,
Frederick Hart, sculptor

Washington, DC

Frederick Hart was a preeminent American sculptor recognized for his study and shaping of the human figure in his sculptures, including The Creation Sculptures on the west facade of Washington National Cathedral and Three Soldiers at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.  His body of work and idea of beauty coupled with the application of innovative materials is claimed to have caused a renewed interest in the beauty of the human figure in contemporary American Art.

Davis Buckley, after assisting in the site selection of the World War II Memorial, teamed with Frederick Hart in the two-tier national competition for the design of this national monument.  The pair had a vision for a representational sculpture, with strong allegorical elements to be placed at the center of a newly reconstructed Rainbow pool.
