House Addition
McLean, VA

Renovation, Construction Administration

The client’s goal was to provide an in-law suite addition to their home in McLean, Virginia that blended in seamlessly while providing the privacy and independence of a separate full two bedroom apartment. This required the approval of a zoning variance from Fairfax County to build an accessory dwelling unit.

Davis Buckley Architects and Planners (DBA) developed a design solution that called for removing the existing garage, and building a new two car garage 13-4” to the east, with a new private entry and stair hall inserted between the new, larger garage and the existing house. The stair leads up to the accessory dwelling unit which was built over the garage. This configuration provides access from the main residence on both the ground floor and second floor levels. On the second floor the new in-law suite connects to the main bedroom corridor through a set of French doors. The in-law suite features a private entry and foyer, living and dining area, a full kitchen, two bedrooms and two bathrooms a launder room. A rear entry ties into the existing deck overlooking a wooded area.

To balance the addition with the original house and form a seamless composition, and new entry portico was added to emphasize the front entry of the main house. The massing of the addition makes reference to the gambrel roof form with dormers of the original house.
